Would you like to dream like when you were a child?

Would you like to dream like when you were a child? The only thing you have to do is to see the movie Finding Neverland. The movie details the experiences of “Peter Pan” and the story about some children who don’t want to grow.

I liked the movie a lot. When I saw it I felt different emotions. The fantasy takes you to other special moments in a life. The performance of the actors is very interesting; they demonstrate that life is unique and that you have to enjoy it at every single moment.

The message of the movie as I see it is shown when one of the main characters deals with the mind of a child who behaves and feels like a hopeless adult.
I personally recommend this movie to anyone who wants to feel as a child again.

Death, a friend

Wouldn’t it be interesting if death asks you to teach her how to live? In the movie, Meet Joe Black, you can see a possible reaction to the question.
I’m used to see movies related with this kind of things where the limit between good taste and the absurd is crossed, so the movie loses its magic. But definitely I assure that this movie is the exception.
Meet Joe Black tells the story of death taking a break from his usual duties and inhabiting the body of a recently-deceased young man.
It seems to me that in this movie you will find two things to learn: how to live and how would you like to give it an end.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE A CHILD ACTOR ?

The term child actor is generally applied to a child acting in motion pictures or television, but also to an adult who began his or her acting career as a child; to avoid confusion the latter is also called a former child actor.
Luckily In some countries child actors in the performing arts (television, film or stage) are prohibited from doing certain things. In these countries, a child actor may not:
1. risk his or her physical well being (no dangerous stunts)
2. be exposed to morally compromising situations
3. be nude or partially nude
4. engage in overt sexual acts
5. to be victims of any kind
Compulsory education laws mandate that the education of child actor must not be disrupted while the child is working. Whether a child actor is enrolled in public school, private school, or home school, the child does schoolwork under the supervision of a set teacher while on the set.
Finally, the hours a child actor may work are limited. Generally, stricter time limits are imposed for younger actors. A very young infant might be allowed "under the lights" only a few minutes a day. It is common in television production for the role of a young child to be portrayed by identical twins to reduce each child's time on set. When a child turns 18, the legal limits on work time are lifted.
There many other issues involving child actors like the ownership of earnings, the competitive pressure or maybe a troubled adulthood.
I personally believe that parent’s supervision is definitely needed.

Why do kids watch the same movie over and over again?

When we started with our proyect, children chose, according to their own preferences, two movies to work with: Toy Story and Monsters Inc..
During the first workshops, we realized that they had watched both movies
for at least twice, three and more times over and over again!!!
That point made me ask myself the following question:
Why are children eager to watch the same video over and over?
After reading some articles written by experts on children, I found that there are many reasons to answer this question.
Let us share some of the conclusions reached by the experts:
To begin with, young children undoubtedly do this with videos they have enjoyed to repeat the same good feeling again and again. Movies allow kids to feel incredible, they can play to be a heroe, a fairy or whoever they want to be. Everything becomes possible!!!
But there’s more to it than that. Some videos are very complex from the viewpoint of a young child´s mind and it may take many, many viewings to pick up the essential elements of even a simple programme. Beyond the elements necessary to understand the video, children can discover more and more details as they watch again and again.
Moreover, young children are also very comfortable with things that are familiar, and they undoubtedly enjoy the empowering feeling of being able to predict what happens next, and this fact can result really magical!
Another factor that I found in my research is that young children have trouble in the understanding of a story in which an ugly, mean looking character behaves in a kind manner or a beautiful character acts cruelly. They are usually overwhelmed by the visual image and can´t follow the underlying story. However, children can overcome this inability with repeated viewings and they can increase their understanding substantially. In this point I believe that movies are a great tool to comment stereotypes and to learn that it´s not fair to label people only because on how they look.
Another interesting thing is that children repeatedly watch things that are somewhat frightening in an effort to gain “mastery” over their fearful feelings. This may be done to reassure themselves again and again that the happy ending makes everything all right.
All these factors are at play in our kids´ tendency to watch the same movie repeatedly.
Overall then, we should not worry about a child who wants to watch the same video repeatedly but it is necessary and very important that parents and teachers provide a happy and healthy choice for him.

Learning English through movies

Watching movies has been a fruitful tool to learn, practise and consolidate more the English language. During the different workshops we selected many scenes from the same movies ‘Toy Story 1’ and ‘Monsters Inc.’ and we designed distinct activities to work with the kids. The fact of watching the same scenes over and over again led the children to focus their attention on many details of their beloved characters. One of the main advantages of working with movies is that the students were exposed to real English in enjoyable and well-known contexts. As a consequence, they always showed a great enthusiasm to do different tasks related to movies. Some of the activities that the kids did were drawing, matching pictures and words, matching pictures and descriptions, writing descriptions of some characters. In this step the students were given the chance to practise plenty of vocabulary and the different grammar structures that they were dealing with in an ordinary class. They were learning and using the language without being so much aware that they were doing so. Moreover, they made crafts such as the masks that was an unforgettable activity for all of them. On the Open Day the shining of the masks was the evidence of all the hard work that the students did along the year.

The Pyramid of Giza

This year we have been researching on the seven wonders of the world. We have always been interested in Egypt, so we thought that knowing a little more about how they were built could be useful, that is why we decided to write this article on the pyramid of Giza.
The great pyramid of Giza, just outside Cairo, Egypt, has been discussed and investigated more than any other monument on earth. Also it was the largest monument that had ever been built before this century, and was originally made from more than two and a half million blocks of stones.
This pyramid was built as a tomb for Egyptian pharaoh Khufu who ruled Egypt from about 2592 BC to 3569 BC. Though it is not the only pyramid left in Egypt it has become the most famous and most talked about pyramid in the world.
Building this huge pyramid with simple tools was an incredibly difficult and enormous effort, and the fact is that archaeologists do not know exactly how the heavy stones blocks were carried. Also, to build it they must have had a detailed knowledge of geometry.
Another astonishing fact is that one of the sides of the great pyramid of Giza runs exactly north to South, and the measurement is so perfect that it could not have been an accident. Ancient Egyptians did not possess compasses and did not know the exact line of true north. Such information only became available several centuries later.
Many people believe that the pyramid of Giza is still one of the world’s greatest mysteries due to the technology Ancient Egyptians had.

The missing call
I was sleeping when the telephone rang. It was my son, Tom. He told me that I should go to pick him up to Kyle’s house. It was six o’clock in the morning and I was very tired so my husband went for him.
When I woke up, at half past eight, they weren’t at home. I started to worry and I immediately called my husband to his mobile phone but he had forgotten it at home, So I called Tom’s but he didn’t answer. After that I called the police and I explained them what had happened. They told me that they would surely find them, however I should stay at home waiting in case somebody called.
I was desperate, time was passing very slowly, one hour, two hours, but nobody called, so I decided to look for them. I went to the café where my husband used to go, to the park, to Kyle’s house, everywhere, but they had vanished. So I went back home.
Although I had been outside for a couple of hours, I had a new message in my answering machine. It was the kidnapper, he was asking for a 50.000 dollars reward for Peter and Tom. He also said that if I didn’t leave the money in 530 Rocken Street in fifteen minutes he would kill them. I had the money available in a bank account but there was a problem, I didn’t know when he had called.
As soon as I finished listening to the message, I called the official. First of all I explained him what the kidnapper had said but he abruptly stopped me and said: “It’s too late, they are dead”. I couldn´t believe him or I didn’t want to believe. But in fact he was right; they were dead because of me. I will always regret not being patient. If I had only stayed at home waiting for the call, none of this would have happened.

THE DEPARTED

This thriller film, is the latest by Martin Scorsese, film starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, and Jack Nicholson.
The story takes place in South Boston, where Frank Costello (Jack Nicholson) takes the young Colin Sullivan (Matt Damon) under his wings and trains him to be part of his gang, which is the most dangerous gang in the city.
Years later, Sullivan studies to enter the Massachusetts State Police, with classmates including Agent Barrigan (James Badge Dale). In another class are Trooper Brown (Anthony Anderson) and William “Billy” Costigan (Leonardo DiCaprio).
Billy Costigan has a mission. He is meant to infiltrate into Costello’s gang, and while he tries to win Costello’s trust, Sullivan becomes a State Police officer. Colin takes part of a group of officers whose mission is to kill Costello. Nevertheless, their superiors, do not know that he works for Costello.
The end is unexpected.
When the police and the gangsters realise that there’s an enemy between them, Billy and Colin are in danger because they could be caught and killed. They have to discover the indentity of the infiltrator in order to survive.

In my opinion, this film was excellent. Every detail was perfectly planned, and it was very entertaining, because you cannot imagine how it will finish.
I recommended teenagers as well as adults, and if you watch it, watch it again, you will never get bored of it.

Here you have more information about it, if you want to watch it or if you have already watched it and you don’t know these details:

• Director: Martin Scorsese

• Soundtrack: Minstrel Boy
• Filming location: Boston, Massachusetts, USA
• Awards: Won 4 Oscars, another 45 wins & 45 nominations

“I went to bed and I had a…”

On a dark night in the year 2000 something strange happened in my house, and only me was there, because my grandpa had gone to the supermarket and the rest of the family had died a couple of years before in a car accident.
I was watching TV, when a strange noise came from upstairs, so I said: “who’s there? “Who or What are you? What are you doing?” But nobody or nothing answered: that is the reason why I went upstairs, and there I saw in my bedroom a message that said: “you are a child, so you won’t ever catch me”. After reading the message; I started to run as fast as I could to the supermarket because two weeks ago I had seen a movie that had exactly the same message and the film finished with a broken bone.
The next day, I got up early and I saw that everything was a nightmare. I didn’t know why I had a broken leg, I could only remember that in that movie one child was a sleepwalker.
My conclusion was that if only I had stayed at home I wouldn’t have gone to the cinema, so I wouldn’t have the nightmare and a broken leg.

Easter in United States

During Easter we always go to New York to visit my grandparents. I really enjoy it because there, Easter is celebrated in many different ways by many different religions, and they are all wonderful celebrations.
On Easter Sunday, not just in New York but other cities too, large street parades are held where people show off their new clothes and Easter bonnets. The parade is often led by somebody carrying a candle or a cross.
What I also love is playing Easter egg roll, a game which is played by children. The rules of an Easter Egg Roll are to see who can roll an egg the greatest distance or can make the egg roll without breaking , usually down a grassy hillside or slope. If you go, do not forget playing it!
During Easter time people eat special foods. In Unites States it is baked ham, potatoes and vegetables. They are so delicious that you cannot stop eating them! Easter Hot Cross Buns are served as well.
I always enjoy the time we spend in New York, and each year I look forward to our next trip. I hope I will continue going till the rest of my life.

Easter in Israel

During Easter, a lot of people and pilgrims travel to Israel from all over the world. There, groups walk along Jesus Christ's way to Golgotha.
The route is referred to as the Twelve Stations of the Cross, similar to Tandil (Argentina), where people go to the Calvary and go over the twelve stations.
At one o'clock in the afternoon on Greek Easter Sunday the leader of the church goes into the Jesus’s tombs and the doors are closed after him. The lights go out, bells ring and the leader appears with a blazing torch. The torch is said to have been miraculously lit inside the tomb, it is amazing! Everyone in the church lights their candles off the torch. These lights up the whole church.
Catholics and Protestants celebrate Easter at the same time as the rest of the world, while Orthodox Christian churches celebrate it two weeks later.
I would really like to go and share this ancient ritual. I belong to a catholic family and we believe this holy event is truly special and unusual.

THE THREE LITTLE PIGS

One day three little pigs decide to go and build houses for themselves.

The first little pig builds a house of straw. He says, “Now, the wolf won’t catch me and eat me.”

The second little pig builds a house of sticks. It is stronger than the house of straw. He says, “Now, the wolf won’t catch me and eat me.”

The third little pig builds a house of bricks. It is stronger than the house of sticks. He says, “Now, the wolf won’t catch me and eat me.”

The next day the wolf comes along the road. He comes to the house of straw. The wolf knocks on the door and says “Little pig, little pig, let me come in.”

“No, no,” says the little pig. “By the hair of my chinny chin chin, I will not let you in.”

“Then, I’ll huff and I’ll puff and I’ll blow your house in.” says the wolf.

So he huffs and he puffs and the house of straw falls down. The little pig runs to his brother’s house, who lives in the house of sticks

So he huffs and he puffs but the house of bricks doesn’t fall down. The wolf is very, very, very angry. He says,” Little pigs, I’m going to eat you. I’m going to climb down your chimney to get you.”

The little pigs put a big pot of water on fire, to boil.

The wolf climbs on the roof and comes down the chimney. He falls into the pot with a big splash.

And that is the end of the wolf.

Puss in Boots: comments on our work

First we read the story of Puss in boots and we created a new story of Puss in Boots. Then we made drawings on small pieces of paper. The most difficult picture was the part when the Prince of Carabas married the princess.
Then we prepared the box. We used green paper to cover it and we cut a hole to make the screen. Our teacher helped us to put the story in the TV.
ON the Open Day we told the story.

The gingerbread Man

This is the story of a little old woman and a little old man. One day,
the woman cooks a gingerbread man. She gives him currants for eyes and cherries for buttons. She puts him in the oven to bake.

When the lady opens the oven door, the gingerbread man escapes.
“Stop” says the old woman, “I want to eat you”. The gingerbread man says “Run, run, run, as fast as you can. You can’t catch me: I’m the gingerbread man.” And the lady runs after the gingerbread man.

Then the old man says “Stop! I want to eat you.” The gingerbread man answers: “Run, run, run, as fast as you can. You can’t catch me: I’m the gingerbread man.” And the old man and the old woman run after the gingerbread man.

The gingerbread man runs to the country. A pig says: “Stop. I want to eat you”. The gingerbread man answers “Run, run, run, as fast as you can. You can’t catch me: I’m the gingerbread man.” And the old man, the old woman and the pig run after the gingerbread man.

Later, the gingerbread man gets to a river. He can’t swim. “How can I cross the river?” he thinks.
A fox comes from behind a tree. “I can help you cross the river,” he says. “ Jump on to my tail and I’ll swim across.”

So the gingerbread man jumps on to the fox’s tail. But soon he starts to get wet. “Climb on to my back,” said the fox.

So the gingerbread man jumps on to the fox’s back. As he swims the fox says,” You are too heavy and I’m tired. Climb on to my nose.”

So the gingerbread climbs on to the fox’s nose. The fox tosses the gingerbread up in the air, opens his mouth and snap! That is the end of the gingerbread man.
